A bit about my art and background...
Landscape and natural objects are my primary subjects and tend to be symbolic rather than specific--I'm looking for an underlying essence. My main concerns in art-making are exploring and responding to the environment as it relates to the psyche. It is important to me to paint form and space realistically for the technical challenge and to draw in the viewer, but I like to experiment with shifting areas toward abstraction. Developing a personal means of expression is an ongoing process.
I grew up in a small town in Florida with my highly creative mother as my first art teacher and life example to follow. My early college days took place at Jacksonville University and the University of South Florida in the mid-1970s and a decade later I earned an M.F.A. degree from Georgia State University. I studied art for a summer in Italy, a year in Mexico and consider learning the history and craft of art to be a lifelong pursuit.
My paintings have been exhibited regionally and nationally, in commercial galleries and public venues. Early in my career my medium was printmaking. I made etchings and mixed media drawings, had a business as a freelance illustrator and was employed as a graphic artist. I have also explored the mediums of ceramic sculpture and assemblage. I lived in the vibrant cities of Atlanta and Seattle for years before recently moving with my husband and cats to rural Edisto Island, South Carolina, to land that has been in my mother’s family for generations. Currently I manage that land while relishing the opportunity to paint "en plein air" in a landscape that is close to my heart and work toward a new body of work.
